How to Resize an Image to 20KB, 50KB, or 100KB

Application portals are strict about file sizes in a way nothing else on the internet is. SSC forms commonly demand a photo between 20KB and 50KB, UPSC caps uploads at 200KB, NEET and JEE sit around 100–200KB, and many state portals want a signature under 20KB. Miss the number and the form simply rejects the upload.

Why the usual approach fails

Most people open a generic compressor, drag a quality slider to 60%, and hope. But quality percentage and file size have no fixed relationship — 60% quality on a 12-megapixel phone photo can still be 800KB, while the same setting on a screenshot might produce 30KB. You end up guessing in circles.

A target-size resizer works in the opposite direction: you name the number, and it searches for the highest quality that fits under it.

Step by step

Open the resizer and make sure Target KB mode is selected (it's the default).
Tap the preset that matches your form — 20KB, 50KB, 100KB, 200KB — or type an exact number in the custom box.
Leave Max dimension at 800px for form photos; forms don't need more, and smaller dimensions leave more room for quality.
Drop your photo (or several — each is processed separately) and press Resize.
Check the result line: it shows the final size and dimensions. An "ON TARGET" stamp means the output landed close under your limit.

Keeping the photo sharp at tiny sizes

Start from a cropped photo. If the form wants a face, crop to the face first — spending your 20KB budget on background is a waste.
JPEG beats PNG for photos. PNG is lossless and can't trade quality for size; the tool's default JPEG output is the right choice for small targets.
20KB is genuinely small. At that size, some softness is unavoidable in a full photo. Reducing the max dimension to 500px usually looks better than heavy compression at 800px.

What about MB limits?

Email attachments and some portals speak in MB instead. The conversion is simple: 1MB = 1024KB. Use the 1MB preset, or type 2048 in the custom box for a 2MB cap.
